2010 WORLD PROFESSIONAL BALLROOM DANCING CHAMPIONSHIP
2010, October 13th
On Saturday 2nd October 2010 the World Professional Ballroom Dancing Championship was held in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada.
The organisation was in the very capable hands of Productions Mondial Danse, headed by Alain Millette, president of the Canadian Dance & Dance Sport Council.
The World Championship was the highlight of two days of competitions covering all age groups & styles.
The event was held in the Centre Robert-Guertin, a large stadium with a capacity of approximately four thousand people. However the floor was not overly large being eighty feet by forty feet.

There was much excitement & speculation prior to the event because of two new WDC rules. The first giving ‘wild card’ invitations to the top three couples on the WDC ranking list, who were not already selected as one of their countries two representatives. This is a great innovation making sure that we have the highest level of competition in a World Championship. In fact the ‘wild card’ competitors finished in second, third & fourth place. The second new rule was the inclusion of a basic dance in each round of the competition. This proved to be a great success, being popular with the competitors & audience alike. Every competitor embraced the general ethos of the rule & there were only very minor infringements. In fact many couples looked better dancing basic Tango & Quickstep, than they did doing their ‘usual act’. It was pleasing to see how expressive & musical the basic Tango was, particularly from some of the leading couples.
The first round was comprised of fifty couple representing thirty countries, & I thought it to be of an excellent standard for a first round. Notable absentees were Domenico Soale & Gioia Cerasoli who were unfortunately unable to dance as Gioia was unwell. There were no truly outclassed couples, & the good floorcraft & the lack of aggressive dancing was very apparent. The basic dance this round was Quickstep, & the Karabeys from Germany looked outstanding with a wonderful display of powerful flowing dancing allied to a much improved shape.
The quarter final proved to be an excellent round. Often overlooked, but not this time, were Richard Tonnizzo & Claire Hansen. They danced with style & good quality to reach this stage of the competition. Also showing an improved performance were Urs Geisenhainer & Agnes Kasmierczak. They possess articulate feet which enable them to move with lightness & smoothness. There were several couples who must have been considered strongly for a place in the semifinal. They were Tomasz Papkala & Frantsiska Yordanova representing Poland, Alessio Potenziani & Veronica Vlasova representing Russia, & Denis Donskoy & Maria Galtseva also representing Russia. Any one of these couples could easily have graced the semifinal.
In the semifinal we had Eldar Jafarov & Anna Sazhina representing Azerbaijan, who were delighted to make this round in their very first World Championship; a considerable feat. Representing Hong Kong we had Alex Zhiratkov & Irina Novozhilova who produced their usual robust performance but require much refinement to progress further, as do Igor Litvinov & Julia Ivleva who look rather square & need to study CBM to produce more harmonious dancing. Anton Lebedev & Anna Borshch representing Canada, produced one of their best performances with bold sweeping movement which also needs to be further refined to progress further. Matthew Rooke & Anna Longmore from Australia continue their improvement, & I thought challenged for a place in the final. They must now strive for greater lightness of action, allied to their already powerful presentation. Warren & Kristi Boyce representing Great Britain were next into the final with some stylish dancing. Their Waltz & Foxtrot were particularly good this evening.
So we came to the final round of this fabulous World Championship. The basic dance in the final was waltz, so the final started in a wonderful calm atmosphere as we watched six beautiful presentations of this most romantic of dances.
Into first place by winning four dances & being placed second in tango were Arunas Bizokas & Katusha Demidova of the USA. They really looked clear winners with their effortless movement allied to wonderful body lines. Katusha has improved her posture & in particular her head position which allows them to blend their body weights in a seamless manner. Most impressive! Musically they are also improved & this gives them a ‘warmer’ appearance on the floor.
Into second place by being first in tango & second in the other four dances were Mirko Gozzoli & Edita Daniute with their usual high energy performance. They are probably the fittest couple on the floor & great competitors. Some of the choreography I find questionable, & the quickstep in particular seems to have lost it’s form. Nevertheless if you want action & energy then this is the couple for you.
Victor Fung & Anastasia Muravyova were third in all five dances. Their dancing was classic in it’s approach & their musicality is gradually improving. Like Arunas & Katusha, they have the ability to move without apparent effort. This is, I feel, is one of the hallmarks of first class ballroom dancing.
Following their great impact at Blackpool this year, Giampiero Giannico & Anna Mikhed finished fourth. They continue to impress, & they are in fact a danger to all the couples ahead of them. They produce full musical movement which is most appealing, & their choice of choreography is refreshingly simple & classic. The purity of their dancing makes them great roll models for young couples to emulate.
Sascha & Natascha Karabey were fifth. They danced better than I have ever seen them dance before. Natascha looked magnificent! She is an outstanding lady dancer & now Sascha appears her equal, with much improved footwork, leg & body lines. They were perhaps the most improved couple on the floor.
Sixth place went to Domen Krapez & Monica Nigro who produced powerful movement & must now improve co-ordination to challenge to those above them.
This was an outstanding professional final with lots of quality dancing. It rightly received a standing ovation which went on for a considerable time. It is to be hoped that young professionals & amateurs alike will be influenced by the style & form of the dancing of the majority of these finalists.
The hospitality during our short stay in Canada was superb, as was the organisation, & I would thank & congratulate Alain Millette, president of the Canadian Dance & Dance Sport Council, & everybody connected with Productions Mondial Danse.
